'Call Time'

As I sit here at 3 a.m., with only two hours before I start a long day in the countryside, my mind is a whirlwind of thoughts and feelings. I hear the words “call time”—once a strict summons in my Army days, a reminder of discipline, hardship, and duty. Back then, it was about waking before dawn, pushing through pain and exhaustion to serve with unwavering focus. That time forged me—shaping resilience, strength, and devotion.

Today, “call time” resonates differently. It signals the beginning of a new journey—a day filled with purpose, collaboration, and storytelling. I love both worlds: the grit and rigor of those early mornings, and the tenderness and gratitude I feel now. Both are threads woven into the fabric of who I am—each teaching different lessons but revealing a shared truth: life’s beauty and hardship are intertwined, each giving depth to the other.

Listening to some Tilahun Gessess’ songs, flipping through a book, or gazing at nature evoke feelings of satisfaction, serenity, and a longing for more. I ask myself, why don’t I indulge in these moments more often? Or why do I sometimes feel I am missing out? But then I realize—perhaps I am not doing less. Every day, I live with meaning, gratitude, and quiet satisfaction. Reflecting on my past, I see how those tough lessons built the foundation for my present happiness.

Living through both phases—the soldier and the artist—has shown me that discipline and sacrifice are acts of devotion to life itself. The hardships of war taught me resilience; the pursuit of filmmaking teaches me grace and appreciation. Both require faith, courage, and love. They are two sides of the same coin—each helping me better understand the other.

Tonight, amid fatigue and anticipation, I feel deeply grateful. Doing what I love is a blessing. Supporting my wife who tirelessly directs amid the chaos of a new family, and preparing to create stories in this remote landscape, I realize that these moments of challenge and beauty are all part of one beautiful, unfolding journey.

As I prepare for the day, I carry this gratitude as a lantern—illuminating the path ahead. My past and present are connected—roots that grow deeper in resilience and love. Life’s paradox is that the hardest days lay the foundation for the deepest joys. Both callings—the disciplined soldier and the grateful storyteller—are chapters of my human story. Both teach me that discipline is devotion, and that true fulfillment comes from embracing every moment with open heart and mind.
